Delhi has the advantage of fast expressways and trains in every direction. Here are six weekend escapes, from Himalayan foothills to royal Rajasthan.

    1. Rishikesh

Distance: about 240 km (5 to 6 hours by road; faster by train to Haridwar) · Best for: adventure, spiritual breaks

The yoga capital of the world, with river rafting (usually in season from autumn to early summer), cafes, the evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or nearby Parmarth Niketan, and short hikes to waterfalls.

    2. Agra

Distance: about 230 km (3 to 4 hours via the Yamuna Expressway) · Best for: first-time visitors, families

See the Taj Mahal at sunrise (it is closed on Fridays), Agra Fort and nearby Fatehpur Sikri. Mehtab Bagh across the river offers a calmer sunset view of the Taj.

    3. Jaipur

Distance: about 280 km (about 4.5 to 5 hours) · Best for: culture, shopping

The Pink City's Amer Fort, Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Nahargarh Fort sunset views, plus great shopping for textiles, jewellery and blue pottery. Best over a long weekend.

    4. Neemrana

Distance: about 120 km (about 2.5 hours) · Best for: couples, short breaks

A restored 15th-century fort-palace hotel on the Delhi–Jaipur highway, with zip-lining and heritage walks. Perfect for a luxurious, no-planning weekend.

    5. Lansdowne

Distance: about 250 km (6 to 7 hours) · Best for: nature lovers, slow travel

A quiet cantonment hill town in Uttarakhand with pine forests, Tip-n-Top viewpoint and the peaceful Bhulla Tal lake. Far less commercial than Mussoorie or Nainital.

    6. Sultanpur National Park

Distance: about 50 km (about 1.5 hours) · Best for: birdwatchers, day trips

A bird sanctuary near Gurugram that hosts thousands of migratory birds in winter, including painted storks and many species of ducks and waders.

    Tips

    • October to March is the most comfortable season, but winter fog can delay early-morning drives and trains.
    • Check air quality and fog alerts before driving in December and January.
    • Book Rishikesh camps and Jaipur hotels early for long weekends.
    • Carry ID for hotel check-ins and some monument entries.
