Mumbai and Pune sit on either side of the Western Ghats, which turn spectacularly green in the monsoon. The Konkan coast adds beaches and seafood. Distances below are from Mumbai unless noted.

    1. Lonavala and Khandala

Distance: about 83 (about 65 from Pune) km (about 2 hours from Mumbai) · Best for: monsoon drives, friends

Classic hill stations with Tiger Point, Bhushi Dam, the Karla and Bhaja Buddhist caves, and Lohagad and Rajmachi forts for trekkers. Do not leave without chikki. Monsoon weekends are beautiful but very crowded.

    2. Matheran

Distance: about 85 km (about 2.5 hours, plus a toy train or walk from Neral) · Best for: slow travel, couples

Asia's only automobile-free hill station, where you walk, ride a horse or take a hand-pulled rickshaw. Enjoy viewpoints like Panorama Point and Louisa Point and the quiet red-earth trails.

    3. Alibaug

Distance: about 95 by road; shorter via ferry to Mandwa km (about 1 hour by ferry plus a short drive) · Best for: beach weekends, families

Beaches, Kolaba Fort (reachable on foot at low tide), Kashid beach nearby and fresh Konkan seafood. The ferry from Gateway of India makes it an easy escape.

    4. Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani

Distance: about 120 from Pune; about 260 from Mumbai km (about 3 hours from Pune) · Best for: families, food lovers

Strawberry farms (best in winter and early spring), Venna Lake, Arthur's Seat and Pratapgad Fort. Panchgani's Table Land offers wide plateau views.

    5. Igatpuri

Distance: about 120 km (about 2.5 hours) · Best for: peace and quiet, wine trails

A quiet hill town on the Mumbai–Nashik route, known for monsoon waterfalls, Bhatsa river valley views and the Vipassana meditation centre. Nashik's vineyards are an easy add-on.

    6. Malshej Ghat

Distance: about 125 km (about 3 hours) · Best for: monsoon lovers, photographers

A mountain pass famous for monsoon waterfalls, fog and, in season, flamingos. Nearby Shivneri Fort, birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, adds history.
