Diwali is magical anywhere in India, but some places turn the festival into an unforgettable spectacle. If you are planning to travel this year, the main dates are Dhanteras on November 6, Lakshmi Puja on Sunday, November 8, and Bhai Dooj on November 11, 2026. Here are the best places to experience the festival of lights.
1. Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh: Deepotsav
As the city of Lord Rama, Ayodhya is at the heart of the Diwali story. Its Deepotsav has set multiple Guinness World Records for the largest display of oil lamps. In 2026, the main Deepotsav lighting is expected on Saturday, November 7, with reports of over 28 lakh diyas planned along the ghats of the Saryu river, especially Ram Ki Paidi. Expect a procession, laser and light shows and fireworks.
Tips: hotels fill up two to three months ahead, so book immediately or stay in nearby Faizabad or Lucknow. Private vehicles are usually restricted around Ram Path and the ghats during the event, with parking on the outskirts and shuttle buses into the city. Check the UP Tourism website for official timings and passes.
2. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
On Diwali, Varanasi's ghats glow with diyas, and the evening Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat feels even grander. If you can stay longer, return for Dev Deepawali on November 24, when the ghats are lit with lakhs of lamps for the "Diwali of the gods". Take a boat ride at dusk for the best views.
3. Amritsar, Punjab: Bandi Chhor Divas
For Sikhs, Diwali coincides with Bandi Chhor Divas, marking Guru Hargobind Ji's release from Gwalior Fort. The Golden Temple is illuminated with thousands of lamps and candles, its reflection shimmering in the sacred pool, and fireworks light up the sky. It is one of the most serene and beautiful Diwali experiences in the country. Expect large crowds, so go early and dress modestly with your head covered.
4. Kolkata, West Bengal: Kali Puja
In Kolkata, the Diwali new moon night is Kali Puja. Neighbourhoods set up elaborate pandals, and temples like Dakshineswar and Kalighat draw huge crowds of devotees through the night. The city's lights, decorations and food stalls create an atmosphere similar to Durga Puja. In 2026, Kali Puja falls on the night of November 8.
5. Jaipur, Rajasthan
The Pink City puts on one of India's most beautiful shows of lights. Markets such as Johari Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar and MI Road are decorated with elaborate light installations, with traders competing for the best display. For a panoramic view of the glittering city, head to Nahargarh Fort at sunset.
6. Udaipur, Rajasthan
The City of Lakes is especially romantic during Diwali. Palaces, havelis and ghats around Lake Pichola are lit with diyas, and their reflections on the water are stunning. Book a lakeside rooftop dinner or an evening boat ride for the best experience.
7. Goa: Narkasur night
Goa celebrates Diwali with a unique tradition. On the night before Narak Chaturdashi, which in 2026 means the night of November 7, towns and villages parade giant, often scary, effigies of the demon Narkasur, which are burnt at dawn. Panaji, Mapusa and Margao have some of the biggest displays. Combine it with the beaches, as the tourist season will be in full swing; see our Goa travel guide.
8. Chennai and Tamil Nadu
To experience Deepavali the South Indian way, visit Tamil Nadu on the morning of November 8. The day starts before sunrise with an oil bath, new clothes and fireworks, followed by temple visits and homemade sweets. Shopping streets such as T. Nagar in Chennai are buzzing in the weeks before. Try our South Indian Deepavali sweets if you are celebrating at home.
