Drifting through Kerala's backwaters on a houseboat is one of India's most iconic travel experiences. The network of lakes, rivers and canals around Alappuzha (Alleppey) and Kumarakom lets you watch village life float past: fishermen casting nets, ducks paddling along the banks, children heading to school by canoe and endless rows of coconut palms. With the peak season starting in November, here is how to plan it well.

    Why go

    • Slow travel at its best: a day and night on the water with nothing to do but watch the scenery.
    • Kerala food: houseboat cooks serve fresh karimeen (pearl spot fish) fry, appam, fish curry and red rice.
    • Easy add-ons: Kochi, Munnar's tea hills, Marari beach and Varkala are all within a few hours.

    Best time to visit

November to February is peak season, with pleasant weather and clear skies, but also the highest prices. Book four to six weeks ahead, and earlier for Christmas and New Year.

October is a good shoulder month, with post-monsoon greenery and lower rates. March to May is hot and humid but quieter and good value. The monsoon (June to September) is dramatic and lush with big discounts, though heavy rain can affect some routes. If you visit in August, the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake is worth planning around.

    Alleppey vs Kumarakom

Alleppey has the most houseboats, routes and price options, which makes it ideal for first-timers, families and anyone looking for value. The trade-off is that the main stretches can feel crowded in peak season.

Kumarakom, on the eastern side of Vembanad Lake near Kottayam, is quieter and more upmarket, with lakeside resorts and the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Expect higher prices.

    Houseboats: how they work

A standard overnight cruise usually starts with check-in at the jetty around noon. You cruise through the afternoon, then the boat anchors for the night, as regulations require houseboats to stop cruising between about 6 pm and 6 am. After breakfast, a short morning cruise brings you back to the jetty by mid-morning. Lunch, evening tea, dinner and breakfast are normally included.

    Routes

    • Alleppey loop: the classic overnight route, returning to the same jetty.
    • Alleppey to Kollam: a longer, quieter one-way trip through less busy canals.
    • Kumarakom routes: the southern part of Vembanad Lake and the canals near Kottayam.

Indicative 2026 houseboat prices (per night, for two, meals included)

    • Standard: about ₹8,500-12,000
    • Deluxe: about ₹12,000-25,000
    • Premium and luxury: about ₹25,000-60,000 or more
    • Day cruises: from about ₹9,000

GST is usually extra, and peak-season and holiday rates are higher. Air-conditioning may run only at night on some boats, so confirm before booking.

    Shikara rides

If a full houseboat night is not for you, hire a shikara (a small covered boat) by the hour, typically around ₹600-1,500 per hour. Shikaras can enter narrow village canals that big houseboats cannot, which many travellers find more rewarding.

    Getting there and around

The nearest major airport is Cochin International Airport, about two hours by road from Alleppey. Alappuzha and Kottayam railway stations have good connections to Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai and Bengaluru. Within the region, taxis and autorickshaws are easy to find, and the state water transport ferries offer a cheap, local way to see the backwaters.

    A sample 4-day itinerary

    • Day 1: Fort Kochi: Chinese fishing nets, Mattancherry and a Kathakali show.
    • Day 2: Drive to Alleppey and board an overnight houseboat.
    • Day 3: Disembark, then relax at Marari beach or take a shikara through village canals.
    • Day 4: Kumarakom bird sanctuary in the morning, or head up to Munnar for tea country.

    Practical tips

    • Book with operators approved by Kerala Tourism or the local tourism office, and read recent reviews.
    • Ask exactly what is included: meals, AC hours, route length and pickup.
    • Carry mosquito repellent, sunscreen and a light shawl for the evening breeze.
    • Avoid single-use plastic; the backwaters are a fragile ecosystem.
    • If you are prone to motion sickness, don't worry: backwater water is very calm.

    FAQ

Is one night on a houseboat enough?

For most travellers, yes. One night gives you the full experience; a second night suits those who want to go slow or take the Kollam route.

Can vegetarians manage on a houseboat?

Yes. Tell the operator in advance and the cook will prepare a full vegetarian Kerala menu.

Is a houseboat safe for children?

Generally yes, but ask for boats with railings and life jackets, and keep an eye on young children on deck.
