This is Part 13 of Incredible India, our state-by-state travel series. Start from Part 1: Ladakh or read the previous part, Part 12: Tamil Nadu.
Puducherry (Pondicherry) was the capital of French India until 1954, and it still carries a distinctly French feel. Its tree-lined boulevards, pastel villas and seaside cafés make it one of South India's most charming short getaways, just three hours from Chennai.
Best time to visit
November to February is the most pleasant, though the northeast monsoon can bring heavy rain in October-December. Summer (April-June) is hot and humid. Weekends are busy with visitors from Chennai and Bengaluru.
Top things to do
- White Town (French Quarter): walk or cycle past colonial villas, the French Consulate and Notre Dame des Anges.
- Promenade Beach (Rock Beach): the seafront is closed to traffic in the evenings, perfect for a stroll.
- Sri Aurobindo Ashram: a peaceful spiritual centre in the heart of town.
- Auroville: an international township founded in 1968, with the golden Matrimandir (book a visit in advance).
- Tamil Quarter: traditional Tamil homes with verandahs (thinnai).
- Paradise Beach: reached by a short boat ride from Chunnambar.
- Serenity Beach: popular for beginner surfing lessons.
- Cafés and bakeries: croissants, crêpes and Franco-Tamil fusion food.
Getting there and around
Chennai airport is about 3 hours away by road along the scenic East Coast Road. Puducherry also has a small airport with limited flights, and train connections. Rent a bicycle or scooter to explore; White Town is very walkable.
Sample 3-day itinerary
- White Town walk, the ashram and sunset on the Promenade.
- Auroville and the Matrimandir viewing point, then Serenity Beach.
- Paradise Beach in the morning and a café-hopping afternoon.
Practical tips
- Swimming at Promenade Beach is not safe; use designated beaches.
- Book weekend stays in White Town early.
- Combine with Mahabalipuram on the drive from Chennai.
