Mahindra has launched a CNG version of its XUV 3XO compact SUV, called the XUV 3XO ZNG (pronounced "Zing"), at a starting price of ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Announced in Mumbai on 15 October 2026, it is the company's first mainstream CNG passenger vehicle and Mahindra's first CNG car since the KUV100 Trip, according to CNBC-TV18.

The headline claim is that the turbocharged engine makes the same power and torque on CNG as it does on petrol, something CNG buyers usually have to give up. Test drives have started, while bookings and deliveries begin on 20 October.

Here is everything you need to know.

XUV 3XO ZNG price and variants

The ZNG comes in four variants, according to Mahindra's official press release. All prices are ex-showroom:

    • MX Edge: ₹9.99 lakh
    • RevX Edge (O): ₹10.79 lakh
    • AX5: ₹11.19 lakh
    • RevX A: ₹12.27 lakh

Bookings open on 20 October at Mahindra dealerships and online at auto.mahindra.com, and deliveries are also scheduled to start from 20 October.

With this launch, the XUV 3XO is now offered with four powertrains: petrol, diesel, CNG and electric. CNBC-TV18 notes it competes with the Tata Nexon CNG and Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG.

    Engine and performance

The ZNG uses Mahindra's 1.2-litre mStallion TCMPFi turbocharged petrol engine, which can run on either petrol or CNG. Mahindra says it produces 82 kW (about 111 hp) and 200 Nm of torque in both modes. The company calls 200 Nm the highest torque among CNG passenger vehicles in India, available between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm.

To keep performance up on gas, Mahindra uses a CNG injection pressure of 10 bar, which it says is a first in the segment. CNBC-TV18 notes that the industry commonly uses 5-6 bar. Mahindra credits its turbocharger calibration and engine control mapping for delivering identical output on both fuels.

Mahindra's claimed acceleration figures in CNG mode are:

    • 0-60 km/h: 4.9 seconds
    • 0-100 km/h: 11.8 seconds

These are company figures and have not yet been independently tested.

    Mileage and fuel flexibility

Mahindra claims a certified fuel efficiency of 24.7 km/kg on CNG. As with any official figure, real-world mileage will depend on traffic, driving style and load, and CNBC-TV18 cautions that it may be lower in daily use.

The car switches automatically to petrol when CNG runs low, so drivers are not stranded between filling stations. It shows average and instantaneous fuel economy, and an NGV fast-filling valve is designed to make CNG refuelling quicker.

    Boot space: twin cylinders

A common complaint about CNG cars is that a large gas tank eats up the boot. Mahindra has followed the twin-cylinder approach, placing two smaller cylinders beneath the luggage area. This keeps a flat loading floor and leaves 270 litres of usable boot space, the company says. The spare wheel is mounted under the body, a layout CNBC-TV18 compares to the Tata Nexon CNG.

    Features

Even the base MX Edge variant gets a 26.03 cm (10.25-inch) HD touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and wired Apple CarPlay, cruise control, rear AC vents, a rear-view camera, reverse parking sensors and a 60:40 split rear seat, according to Mahindra.

Higher variants add features such as:

    • Twin 26.03 cm screens, including a digital instrument cluster (AX5)
    • Dual-zone climate control and 65 W USB-C fast charging (AX5)
    • Mahindra's Skyroof, black leatherette seats and a dual-tone roof (RevX Edge (O) and RevX A)
    • Dolby Atmos audio (RevX A)
    • 16-inch alloy wheels (AX5 and RevX A)

    Safety

Six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC) and ISOFIX child-seat mounts are standard on every variant. Three-point seat belts are fitted for all passengers.

The ZNG also gets a CNG-specific safety feature: an integrated gas-leak detection system that can detect a leak and automatically switch the car to petrol.

Mahindra says the ZNG is "engineered for 5-star ratings" and is built on the existing XUV 3XO, which has a five-star Bharat NCAP rating for both adult and child occupant protection. The CNG version itself has not been separately crash-tested yet.

    Why the launch matters

CNG remains popular in India because it costs less to run than petrol, especially for buyers who drive long distances in cities with good gas networks. Until now, Mahindra had no CNG option in this segment while rivals did.

The XUV 3XO has been a strong seller, with cumulative sales crossing 2.5 lakh units in under two and a half years, Mahindra says. Adding CNG gives it a lower-running-cost option just as the festival buying season peaks, a busy period that has also seen launches like the 2026 Toyota Glanza facelift.

The launch also shows that carmakers still see a long future for fuel-flexible combustion cars, even as electric vehicles gain ground. India's EV share has been rising fast, as we reported in our analysis of VAHAN registration data.

    Should you consider it?

If you drive a lot in a city with easy CNG access and want an SUV rather than a hatchback, the ZNG is worth a test drive. The claim of no power loss on CNG is its biggest selling point, so check how it feels on the road, especially with a full load.
