Indian shares head into the week of 19–23 October 2026 after their best weekly gain in about six months. A sharp rally in IT stocks, a firmer rupee and steady buying by domestic institutions lifted the Nifty 50 and Sensex nearly 3% last week. This week has only four trading sessions because of the Dussehra holiday, and it is packed with triggers. The major private banks reported results on Saturday, Infosys and a long list of other companies report in the next few days, and Jio Platforms' record-sized IPO opens. Brent crude near $110 a barrel and continued foreign selling remain the main risks.

Here is how the market closed, what to track this week, the levels analysts are watching and the stocks likely to be in focus.

IT stocks drove the gains. According to Financial Express, the Nifty IT index jumped 11.72% during the week, its steepest weekly rise since April 2008. Tech Mahindra led the Sensex gainers after its Q2 FY27 consolidated net profit rose 32.74% to ₹1,585.6 crore (BusinessLine). TCS, HCLTech and Infosys also posted double-digit weekly gains. The broader market lagged: the Nifty Midcap 100 rose just 0.58% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 slipped 0.12%. Business Today noted that this was the Nifty's second straight weekly gain after an eight-week losing streak. Our weekly market analysis for 12–16 October covers last week day by day.

Key triggers for the week of 19–23 October

    1. Holiday-shortened week and expiry shift

Indian markets are closed on Tuesday, 20 October, for Dussehra. Equities, derivatives and debt segments will not trade, according to Mint, which cites the NSE and BSE holiday lists. Because of the holiday, CNBC-TV18 reports that the weekly options expiry moves to Monday, 19 October, which could add volatility to the first session of the week.

    2. Bank results from Saturday

HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Yes Bank all reported September-quarter numbers on Saturday, 17 October, so Monday is the market's first chance to react. CNBC-TV18 called the Nifty Bank the "market-moving index" for Monday. Core income growth and asset quality were broadly healthy, but margins came under pressure at all three large private lenders (details in the stocks table below).

    3. Q2 FY27 earnings calendar

Dates below are from earnings calendars published by Business Today and Upstox. Company schedules can change, so check exchange filings.

    • Mon, 19 Oct: Bajaj Finance, UltraTech Cement, Hindustan Zinc, Union Bank of India, Piramal Finance, LTTS, IREDA, Waaree Renewable Technologies
    • Wed, 21 Oct: Eternal (Zomato's parent), Adani Green Energy, Indian Hotels, SRF, Vishal Mega Mart, M&M Financial Services, KEI Industries
    • Thu, 22 Oct: Adani Energy Solutions, HPCL, Havells India, Swiggy, Nippon Life India AMC, Adani Total Gas, Jindal Stainless, Colgate-Palmolive (India)
    • Fri, 23 Oct: Infosys, Adani Power, JSW Steel, Tata Motors, BPCL, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Torrent Pharma, Coforge, Shree Cements, IndusInd Bank, Godrej Properties
    • Sat, 24 Oct (after the week ends): Kotak Mahindra Bank, AU Small Finance Bank, IDFC First Bank

    4. Jio Platforms IPO and a busy primary market

Reliance-backed Jio Platforms' IPO is the week's biggest event in the primary market. According to Mint and Business Today:

    • Dates: anchor bidding on 19 October; the issue is open from 21 to 23 October
    • Price band: ₹1,065–1,119 per share
    • Size: about ₹30,200 crore at the top of the band, all fresh issue with no offer-for-sale component. That would make it India's largest IPO ever, ahead of Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,870-crore issue in 2024.

Business Today also lists these mainboard IPOs and listings:

    • Paras Healthcare IPO opens on 21 October
    • Tonbo Imaging India, Zetwerk Manufacturing Business, Bonfiglioli Transmissions and Sahajanand Medical Technologies close for bidding on 19 October and are scheduled to list on 23 October
    • HD Fire Protect is scheduled to list on 21 October
    • Fusion CX is scheduled to list on 22 October

    5. FII selling vs DII buying

Foreign investors were net sellers again last week, but the size of the outflow depends on whose data you use:

    • Bajaj Broking (quoted by Mint): FIIs were net sellers for a ninth straight week at about ₹8,991 crore (₹89.91 billion), down sharply from about ₹30,294 crore the week before. They turned net buyers of about ₹1,166 crore on Friday.
    • Financial Express put weekly FPI selling at ₹3,517.73 crore.
    • Business Today reported ₹15,440 crore.

The tallies likely use different data sets. Domestic institutions kept buying: both Bajaj Broking and Financial Express put weekly DII net purchases at about ₹7,813 crore. Bajaj Broking added that month-to-date DII buying of about ₹48,168 crore has almost fully absorbed FII selling of about ₹48,769 crore.

    6. Crude oil, rupee and global cues

    • Crude oil: Brent ended Friday close to $110 a barrel, according to CNBC-TV18 and Mint, with Mint reporting a weekly rise of more than 5%. CNBC-TV18 said continuing hostilities in West Asia keep oil a key risk. Higher crude raises India's import bill and inflation pressure, which matters given that September retail inflation came in at 5.54%.
    • Rupee: The rupee rose nearly 2% last week and closed at 94.96 per dollar on Friday (Mint, BusinessLine), helped by RBI measures to curb spot dollar demand. Amit Pabari of CR Forex Advisors told Business Today that a sustained break below 94.80 could bring 94 into focus.
    • Global: Business Today noted that US inflation rose to 3.7% in September from 3.4% in August, fuelling worries about further Federal Reserve tightening. CNBC-TV18 flagged two other cues: the continuing sell-off in AI-linked stocks on Wall Street, which has helped Indian IT through a "reverse AI trade", and a US waiver of Russia-linked sanctions tariffs for at least six months, which could ease one overhang for emerging markets.

Nifty and Bank Nifty: levels analysts are watching

Technical analysts broadly describe the setup as constructive but stretched after a rally of roughly 900 points in six sessions.

    • Nagaraj Shetti, HDFC Securities: The weekly chart shows a bullish "Morning Star"-type pattern. Further upside could take the Nifty to 23,500–23,600, with support around 22,800 (CNBC-TV18, Business Today).
    • Amol Athawale, Kotak Neo: Suggests buying on dips and selling on rallies. He sees support at 23,000 and 22,800 and resistance at 23,300–23,500 (CNBC-TV18).
    • Pabitro Mukherjee, Bajaj Broking: Sees possible upside to 23,500, the 50% retracement of the earlier fall. If momentum fades, he expects consolidation in a 22,500–23,150 range, with the recovery intact above 22,500 (Mint).
    • Sudeep Shah, SBI Securities (Bank Nifty): Immediate support at 55,200–55,300, then 54,800. Resistance at 56,300–56,400; a move above that could open the way to 56,900 (CNBC-TV18).
    • Om Mehra, SAMCO Securities (Bank Nifty): Support at 55,500 and 55,400, with 56,000 and 56,200 as the key upside levels (CNBC-TV18).

CNBC-TV18 also suggested that 23,200 could act as near-term resistance on Monday as traders book profits.

The IT sector's rebound and its effect on stocks such as Wipro and Tech Mahindra are covered in our piece on the Nifty IT index's best week in 18 years.

What could drive the market this week

Most analysts expect the recovery to continue but in a choppier way. Siddhartha Khemka of Motilal Oswal told Business Today that the Nifty "is expected to consolidate with a gradual recovery, although intermittent volatility may persist in broader markets". Possible support for the market includes:

    • Softer FII selling
    • Steady DII buying
    • A firmer rupee
    • The IT rebound
    • Expectations of a review of long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and securities transaction tax (STT), which Financial Express cited as one reason for last week's rally

    The main risks are:

    • Brent crude staying near or above $110
    • Profit-taking after a fast rally
    • A weak reaction to bank margins
    • Large IPOs such as Jio Platforms drawing liquidity away from the secondary market

With Monday's expiry and Tuesday's holiday, the first two days could set the tone. Watch whether the Nifty can hold above the 22,800–23,000 support band analysts have flagged and clear the 23,200–23,300 zone.
