The Indian passport moved up one place in the latest Henley Passport Index, but that is not quite good news. In the October 2026 edition, India ranks 84th, up from 85th. Yet the number of destinations Indians can enter without a prior visa has fallen to 55, from 57 a year ago.
Here is what the ranking means, and a practical list of the easiest places for Indians to visit this winter.
Ranking up, access down
According to Business Today, India shares 84th place with Algeria and Mauritania in the index dated October 9, 2026. The Henley Passport Index ranks 199 passports by the number of destinations, out of 227, that their holders can enter without getting a visa in advance, using IATA data.
At the top, Singapore keeps first place with access to 193 destinations. Japan, South Korea and the UAE are joint second with 188 each. The UK is sixth with 184, and the US is tenth with 180.
How can India rise while losing access? Rankings are relative. India climbed one place because other countries' scores changed, not because Indians can travel more freely. In fact, they have fewer visa-free options than last October.
The index also counts visa-on-arrival and electronic travel authorisations as "no prior visa". So a destination on the list may still require paperwork, an online form or a fee.
The easy list: winter destinations for Indian passport holders
These are destinations where Indians can travel without applying for a traditional visa in advance, or with only a simple online step. Conditions apply in every case: carry return tickets, hotel bookings and proof of funds, and always confirm on the destination's official immigration website before booking.
Visa-free, no prior paperwork
- Nepal. Indian citizens do not need a visa. Pokhara is on Skyscanner's 2027 trending list.
- Bhutan. No visa, but you need an entry permit, and Bhutan charges visitors a daily Sustainable Development Fee. Indians pay a separate, lower rate, so check the current amount on Bhutan's official tourism site.
- Thailand: 30 days for tourism. From September 15, 2026, Thailand replaced its earlier 60-day exemption with a 30-day visa exemption for Indian ordinary passport holders travelling for tourism, the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi confirmed. Complete Thailand's online Digital Arrival Card before arrival.
- Malaysia: 30 days, until December 31, 2026. India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) lists 30-day visa-free entry for Indians until December 31, 2026. No extension beyond that date had been announced when we checked, so this winter may be the last chance to use it. You will need to submit Malaysia's online arrival card (MDAC).
- Kazakhstan. The MEA lists a 14-day, non-extendable visa-free stay.
- Philippines: 14 days. According to the MEA, Indians can enter the Philippines without a visa for a non-extendable 14 days for tourism. You will need a passport valid for six months beyond your stay, a confirmed hotel booking, proof of funds and a return or onward ticket.
- Caribbean and Pacific options. The MEA lists visa-free entry for Indians to destinations including Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada (90 days each), Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (30 days), Dominica, and Vanuatu. These are long trips from India, so they suit travellers combining them with other stops.
A free online step, or a visa on arrival
- Sri Lanka: free ETA. Since May 25, 2026, Indian nationals have been eligible for a free-of-charge tourist ETA for 30 days with double entry, according to Sri Lanka's official ETA portal. The ETA is still required, so apply on the official site before you fly.
- Maldives: no advance visa. The MEA lists the Maldives among countries giving Indians visa-free entry. Travellers generally need a confirmed booking at a registered property, a return ticket and funds, and must file the Maldives' online traveller declaration (IMUGA) before arrival.
- Mauritius and Fiji: visa on arrival. The MEA lists both among countries offering Indians a visa on arrival. Check the entry conditions with each country's official sources before you fly.
If you already hold a US, UK or Schengen visa
A valid visa from a major country can open up a few extra options, according to the MEA:
- Philippines: Indians holding valid American, Japanese, Australian, Canadian, Schengen, Singapore or UK visas or residence permits can stay visa-free for tourism for up to 30 days, rather than 14.
- Kyrgyzstan: Indians with long-term multiple-entry US, UK or Schengen visas can stay visa-free for up to 7 days, but only when arriving by air at Bishkek's Manas International Airport. Bishkek is No 1 on Skyscanner's 2027 trending list.
Quick e-visa destinations
- Vietnam: an online e-visa, reported at US$25 for a single entry of up to 90 days. IndiGo launches daily Mumbai-Hanoi flights from October 25.
- Indonesia and several others also offer quick online visas. Use only the official government portals.
Destinations that have tightened
Visa rules for Indians can change with little notice. Over the past couple of years, travel publications tracking visa rules have reported that Serbia withdrew visa-free access for Indians and Iran revoked its visa waiver. Thailand has now shortened its stay from 60 to 30 days. This helps explain why India's visa-free count has gone down.
How to use this list without getting stuck
- Check the destination's own source. MEA's "Visa facility for Indian nationals" page is a useful starting point, but it is not always updated immediately. When we checked, it still showed Thailand's old 60-day stay. Always confirm on the destination's own immigration or embassy website.
- Check the conditions, not just the headline. "Visa-free" usually still means a passport valid for at least six months, return tickets, accommodation and funds.
- Do not pay for free forms. Thailand's arrival card, Malaysia's MDAC, Sri Lanka's ETA and the Maldives' declaration are free or low-cost on official sites. Third-party sites often charge for the same forms.
- Watch expiry dates. Malaysia's exemption ends on December 31, 2026, unless it is extended again.
- Book flexibly over peak dates. Christmas and New Year fares and hotel rates are typically at their highest.
The bottom line
Despite the rise in rank, India's visa-free access has slightly shrunk, and rules are changing more often. Even so, the options closer to home are good: Thailand for 30 days, Malaysia until year-end, Sri Lanka with a free ETA, the Maldives on arrival, and Nepal and Bhutan without a visa. Check the rules before you book, and carry your paperwork.
