November and December are the best months for travel in much of India. The monsoon has gone, the heat has eased, and the country's biggest cultural events take place in these weeks. This year the season starts with Diwali on November 8 and ends with the Christmas-New Year rush, with camel fairs, lamp-lit ghats, Naga tribal festivals and the white salt desert of Kutch in between.

Here is a festival-led guide to where to go in November and December 2026, with dates taken from official tourism listings where available. Always confirm with the organiser before booking, because event dates can shift.

    November 2026

Pushkar Camel Fair, Rajasthan (November 17-24)

India's tourism ministry portal, Incredible India, lists the Pushkar Camel Fair from November 17 to 24, 2026. The fair builds up to Kartik Purnima, when pilgrims bathe in Pushkar Lake and visit the town's Brahma temple. Expect decorated camels, livestock trading, folk music, moustache and matka-tod competitions, and hot-air balloon rides over the fairground.

Tip: Tented camps around the fairground fill up early and charge peak rates. Staying in Ajmer, about half an hour away, can be cheaper. Jaipur is the nearest major airport.

Dev Deepawali, Varanasi and Prayagraj (November 24-25)

Two weeks after Diwali, on Kartik Purnima, Varanasi's ghats are lit with thousands of earthen lamps for Dev Deepawali, the "Diwali of the gods". Incredible India lists it for November 24-25 in Varanasi and November 24 in Prayagraj, where the Sangam is lit up too.

Tip: A boat on the Ganga gives the best view, and boats are booked well in advance for the main evening. Book rooms on or near the ghats early and expect road restrictions in the old city.

Rann Utsav, Kutch, Gujarat (season opens late October)

The white salt desert of the Great Rann of Kutch is best seen on a full-moon night. The Rann Utsav tent city at Dhordo is the easiest way to experience it. Incredible India's events calendar lists the 2026-27 season as running from October 23, 2026, to March 4, 2027. The festival includes folk performances, a crafts bazaar, camel rides and adventure activities. Plan around the November full moon (Kartik Purnima) if you can.

Tip: Bhuj is the nearest airport. Visit Kutch's craft villages for embroidery, block-printing and bell-metal work.

    Chandigarh Carnival (November 27-30)

A smaller city event, the Chandigarh Carnival is listed for November 27-30. It can be combined with a trip to the hills of Himachal Pradesh.

Also in late November: the Banaras Culture Biennale

The CII Banaras Culture Biennale is listed from November 27 to December 31, 2026. It celebrates the city's living heritage alongside contemporary art, which gives visitors another reason to stay on in Varanasi after Dev Deepawali.

    December 2026

Hornbill Festival, Nagaland (usually December 1-10)

The "Festival of Festivals" brings together all of Nagaland's tribes at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, about 12 km from Kohima. The festival's official site says it usually runs from December 1 to 10 each year. Expect traditional morungs, war dances, archery, indigenous games, Naga cuisine, crafts and a music festival alongside. Check the official site for the 2026 schedule.

Tip: Domestic tourists need an Inner Line Permit for Nagaland, which can be applied for online. Kohima's hotels and homestays fill up for the festival, so book early. Dimapur is the nearest airport.

Konark Festival and International Sand Art Festival, Odisha (December 1-5)

Incredible India lists both the Konark Festival, a showcase of Indian classical dance in front of the Sun Temple, and the International Sand Art Festival on Chandrabhaga beach for December 1-5, 2026. Odisha's seasonal Eco Retreat Konark glamping site is listed as opening from December 1.

Tip: Combine the trip with Puri and Bhubaneswar. The Puri Coastal Marathon is listed for December 13.

    Mizoram Winter Festival (December 15-20)

For something less crowded, Mizoram's Winter Festival is listed for December 15-20, showcasing the state's culture and adventure activities.

Places trending this season, festival or not

Booking data released this month points to a few destinations worth considering:

    • Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. Hostel chain Zostel reports that Sangla, Kalpa and Chitkul are among its fastest-growing destinations this festive season, with Sangla at three times last year's bookings. Late autumn brings clear skies and apple-orchard country, but winter can bring snow and road disruptions. Go early in the season and check conditions.
    • Hampi, Gokarna, Varkala, Rishikesh and Jaipur are Zostel's most-booked festive destinations so far.
    • Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. Skyscanner's Travel Trends 2027 report lists both among destinations where flight prices have fallen, with Jaisalmer down 43%. Winter is peak desert season.
    • Malvan, Maharashtra. It ranks fourth on Skyscanner's list of searches with the biggest year-on-year growth, which suggests interest in this Konkan coast town is rising.
    • Weekend escapes. Hoteliers report strong demand at Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, Coorg, Ooty, Mussoorie, Udaipur and Darjeeling.

Budget and booking tips for the season

    • Avoid the most expensive dates if you can. Travel platform Scapia says room rates run about 30% above normal around Diwali and about 40% above normal over Christmas and New Year's Eve. Mid-November and early-to-mid December are often the best-value windows.
    • Book festival-town stays first, then flights. In Pushkar, Kohima and Varanasi, accommodation runs out before flights do.
    • Pack for the weather. Desert nights in Rajasthan and Kutch can be cold, and Nagaland and Kinnaur are colder still.
    • Respect local customs. Many of these are religious or community events, not staged shows. Ask before photographing people or rituals.

From Pushkar's camels to Kohima's tribal festival, India's festive season has plenty to choose from. The main thing is to decide early.
