A full phone slows down, refuses to install updates and stops you from taking photos at the worst moment. Before you think about buying a new phone, try these simple fixes. Most of them take only a few minutes.

First, see what is using your space

    • Android: Settings, then Storage (or Device care, then Storage on some phones).
    • iPhone: Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage.

You will see a breakdown by apps, photos, videos and system files. Start with the biggest category.

    12 easy fixes

    1. Clean up WhatsApp media

WhatsApp is often the biggest space hog. Go to WhatsApp Settings, then Storage and data, then Manage storage. Delete large files, forwarded videos and old group media.

    2. Turn off WhatsApp auto-download

In the same Storage and data menu, set media auto-download to "No media" or Wi-Fi only, so every forwarded video does not land on your phone.

    3. Back up photos to the cloud

Use Google Photos or iCloud Photos to back up your pictures, then use the "Free up space" (Google Photos) or "Optimize iPhone Storage" (iCloud) option to remove local copies safely.

    4. Delete duplicate photos, screenshots and blurry shots

Screenshots pile up quickly. Google Photos and the iPhone Photos app both help you find duplicates and screenshots.

    5. Empty the "Recently deleted" folders

Deleted photos often stay in a bin for 30 days. Empty it to reclaim space immediately.

    6. Clear app cache (Android)

Go to Settings, then Apps, choose a heavy app such as a browser, YouTube or Instagram, open Storage and tap Clear cache. This does not delete your account data.

    7. Offload unused apps (iPhone)

In iPhone Storage, turn on Offload Unused Apps. The app is removed but your data stays, and it reinstalls when you tap it.

    8. Uninstall apps you no longer use

Many people have games and shopping apps they have not opened in months. Remove them.

    9. Delete downloaded videos and music

Check YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, Spotify and similar apps for offline downloads you have already watched or heard.

    10. Clear the Downloads folder

PDFs, APKs and attachments collect in the Files app on Android and the Files app on iPhone. Delete what you do not need.

    11. Move files to an SD card or computer

If your Android phone supports a memory card, move photos and videos to it. Otherwise, copy large files to a laptop or external drive.

    12. Restart and update

A restart clears temporary files, and system updates sometimes fix storage bugs. Make sure you have enough space for the update itself.

    What not to do

    • Avoid third-party "cleaner" and "booster" apps. Many show ads, collect data or do nothing useful.
    • Do not clear app data unless you are prepared to log in again and lose local settings.
    • Check that backups have finished before deleting photos.

    The bottom line

A monthly five-minute clean-up of WhatsApp media, photos and unused apps keeps most phones running smoothly. Combine it with cloud backup and you may never see the "storage full" warning again.
