A burst of frontier releases since early September has left the AI leaderboards without a single clear winner. Google's Gemini 4 Argon, released on 13 October, sits at the top of the LMArena text leaderboard, where people vote on blind head-to-head answers. Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 leads the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, which averages ten demanding tests. OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra posts the strongest scores its maker has published on maths, science and abstract reasoning. It is also the most expensive of the three.
The short version: no single model wins everything. The right choice depends on the job, the budget and how much you trust self-reported benchmarks. This guide compares the current leaders and says which one to use. All rankings are as of 15–16 October 2026.

The quick ranking
The two leaderboards most people check measure different things:
- LMArena text (snapshot dated 15 October 2026): 1. Gemini 4 Argon (High), 1524 ±9, marked preliminary on about 4,900 votes; 2. Meta's Muse Wonder (Max), 1509 ±11; 3. Claude Opus 5.5 (High), 1508 ±7. The margins of error overlap, so places 1 to 3 are close to a statistical tie.
- Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v4.3.2 (checked 16 October 2026): Claude Opus 5.5 at maximum effort scores 58. Claude Sonnet 5.5 (max) and Meta's subscription-only Muse Wonder Full score 56. Claude Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra and Gemini 4 Argon are bunched at 53.
Putting those together with price and availability, here is HorizonDesk's overall order for most professional users today:
- Claude Opus 5.5 (Anthropic): highest independent composite score, top three in human voting, mid-range price.
- Gemini 4 Argon (Google): first in human preference, competitive composite score, and the cheapest flagship until 30 November.
- GPT-6 Astra (OpenAI): the strongest published reasoning, science and computer-use results, at a premium price.
- Claude Fable 5.1 (Anthropic): a top-tier model for the hardest long jobs, but priced like one.
- Muse Wonder (Meta): a strong new entrant that is second on LMArena, though its best version is not sold through the API.
Comparison table
Prices are standard API rates in US dollars per million input/output tokens, taken from each company's own pages. Context is the maximum tokens a model can handle in one request.

Model by model
Claude Opus 5.5
Anthropic says Opus 5.5 performs at the level of its pricier Claude Fable 5.1 "on most work" while costing about 40% less to run than Opus 5. Its output is also more than 30% faster than Opus 5's. It tops the Artificial Analysis index at maximum effort. The catch is cost per task: Artificial Analysis puts it at $5.98 at max effort, versus $1.82 at high effort for a score of 54. For a primer on the Claude apps, see our beginner's guide to Claude.
Gemini 4 Argon
Argon is Google's new flagship reasoning model. Input, thinking and output share one window of 1,048,576 tokens, and a single answer can now run well past the old 64K-token cap. Google says it ranks first on the Vals Index of finance, legal, tax and coding work. The $2/$10 launch price doubles on 1 December. We covered the launch in detail in Gemini 4 Argon: launch, pricing and features.
GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol
OpenAI calls Astra its most capable model. Its own tables show 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, 96.0% on GPQA Diamond and 72.6% on the OSWorld 2.0 computer-use test. Of the leaders Artificial Analysis has timed, Astra is the slowest, and the dearest. GPT-6.1 Sol is the value pick: OpenAI says it matches Astra on the DeepSWE coding benchmark at about a fifth of the cost. It scores 52 on Artificial Analysis for $0.72 per task at max effort, against $3.26 for Astra. In ChatGPT, the GPT-6 rollout that began on 7 October uses GPT-6 Sol for paid plans and GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go users.
Claude Fable 5.1 and Sonnet 5.5
Fable 5.1 is Anthropic's top general-release model, aimed at demanding reasoning and long agentic runs. Sonnet 5.5 is the surprise. It is priced at $2/$10, and at max effort it scores 56 on Artificial Analysis, ahead of every non-Anthropic model and level with Meta's Muse Wonder Full.
Muse Wonder
Meta's first frontier model launched on 12 October. TechCrunch notes that Meta's own testing puts it level with Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra. The stronger Muse Wonder Full is available only through Muse Code subscriptions, not the API. More on Meta's strategy is in what Meta's Muse Wonder models mean for you.
Grok 4.7
xAI's documentation now carries the SpaceXSI name. Its September model costs $2/$6, and the company reports 46.3% on CursorBench 4.0 and 37.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0. It scores 46 on Artificial Analysis and ranks 89th on LMArena text. That makes it a budget coding option rather than a chat leader.
Best for coding and agents
Most labs now cite newer, harder tests such as Terminal-Bench 4.0, DeepSWE and CursorBench rather than older suites like SWE-bench Verified. The trouble is that each lab runs them differently. Anthropic reports 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 for Sonnet 5.5 and 66.4% for Opus 5.5 at extra-high effort. OpenAI reports 57.9% for Astra and 55.8% for Fable 5.1. Those figures come from different setups, so they are not a clean head-to-head.
Verdict: Claude Opus 5.5 for long, unattended coding, with Sonnet 5.5 or GPT-6.1 Sol when cost matters. Muse Wonder Full is worth testing if you already pay for Muse Code. Meta says it topped DeepSWE in independent runs.
Best for reasoning, maths and science
GPT-6 Astra has the strongest published case. OpenAI reports 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and 96.0% on GPQA Diamond. On ARC-AGI-3, the ARC Prize Foundation's own verified results show Astra at 62.7% with its standard harness. With a "provider adapter" harness that keeps reasoning state between steps, it reaches 99.9%. That gap shows how much the test setup can matter. On Humanity's Last Exam, Anthropic reports 67.7% with tools for Opus 5.5, and 60.9% without tools and 65.0% with tools for Fable 5.1.
Verdict: GPT-6 Astra for frontier maths and research, if the budget allows. Claude Opus 5.5 is a close and cheaper alternative.
Writing, chat and multimodal work
LMArena's blind voting is the best public signal of what people prefer in everyday answers, and Gemini 4 Argon leads it. Google says Argon follows style instructions better than earlier Gemini models, with less hedging and fewer clichés. Argon also has the broadest inputs among the leaders: text, images, video, audio and PDFs. GPT-6 Astra and the Claude models take text and images.
Notably, GPT-6 Astra sits only 30th on LMArena text despite its benchmark results. Raw problem-solving power and conversational appeal are not the same thing.
Verdict: Gemini 4 Argon for writing, everyday chat and video or audio analysis.
Speed and cost
Artificial Analysis's median output speeds show a wide spread. Muse Wonder (max) runs at 184 tokens a second and Sonnet 5.5 (max) at 138. Opus 5.5 (max) manages 97 and GPT-6 Astra (max) 54. Argon's speed had not yet been published.
On cost per task in its test suite, Gemini 4 Argon ($1.99) and GPT-6.1 Sol ($0.72) stand out among top-scoring models. DeepSeek V4.1-Flash costs $0.27 for a score of 39. Two price traps are worth knowing. OpenAI charges double for input on prompts above 272K tokens. Grok 4.7's rates double once prompts reach 200K tokens.
Open-weight options
Open-weight models can be downloaded and run on your own hardware. They still trail the closed leaders by a clear margin on Artificial Analysis. The best open model there is Xiaomi's MiMo-V2.6-Pro at 46, followed by Z.ai's GLM-5.3 at 45.
- Qwen3.8 (Alibaba): a 2.4-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model that activates 95 billion parameters per token. The open checkpoint, Qwen3.8-2.4T-A95B, is text-only and always reasons. Vision and the default 1M context are features of the hosted Qwen3.8-Max. The Qwen family also powers Apple Intelligence's planned China launch.
- DeepSeek V4.1-Flash: 552 billion backbone parameters, MIT-licensed, with a 1M context and some of the lowest API prices around.
- Muse Spark Open (Meta): released on 15 October with 816 billion parameters, 42 billion of them active. It is under Meta's own licence with limited commercial terms, and two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios can run it. See our Muse Spark Open explainer.
- Mistral Large 4: a 1-trillion-parameter model in API preview since 6 October. Mistral says the weights will be released by the end of October, so it is not yet open.
Which one should you use?
- One model for serious work: Claude Opus 5.5.
- Best value at the top tier right now: Gemini 4 Argon, while the $2/$10 price lasts.
- Hardest maths, science or research: GPT-6 Astra.
- High-volume coding or agents on a budget: GPT-6.1 Sol or Claude Sonnet 5.5, both at $2/$10.
- Everyday chat, writing and video or audio inputs: Gemini 4 Argon.
- Data must stay in-house: DeepSeek V4.1-Flash or Qwen3.8 if you have server hardware, or Muse Spark Open on a high-end Mac setup.
Why benchmarks need a pinch of salt
- Many scores are self-reported. Labs choose the tests, settings and rivals they compare against. Treat vendor tables as claims.
- Setups change results. ARC-AGI-3's 62.7% versus 99.9% for the same model is a stark example.
- Public tests leak. On Scale AI's refreshed SWE-Bench Pro V2, Claude Opus 5 solved 638 of 642 public tasks but 222 of 272 private ones. Scale says training-data exposure is a plausible explanation.
- Fallbacks blur the picture. Artificial Analysis lists several Claude results "with fallback": when safety filters trigger, the request goes to another model.
- Rankings are fresh. Argon's LMArena lead rests on fewer than 5,000 votes and is marked preliminary. Expect movement within weeks.
Test any shortlisted model on your own tasks before committing. A 2-point index gap matters less than how a model handles your documents, code and language.
