India's biggest private lenders announced their results for the July to September 2026 quarter (Q2 FY27) on Saturday, 17 October, setting the tone for banking stocks as markets open this week. Here are the key numbers and what they mean.
Results at a glance
| Bank | Q2 FY27 net profit | Year-on-year change |
|---|---|---|
| HDFC Bank (standalone) | ₹19,510 crore | +4.7% |
| ICICI Bank (standalone) | ₹14,843 crore | +20.1% |
| Axis Bank | ₹7,003 crore | +38% |
| IDBI Bank | ₹2,205 crore | −39% |
| Yes Bank (consolidated) | ₹1,080 crore | +65% |
ICICI Bank: steady, strong growth
ICICI Bank's standalone profit rose about 20% to ₹14,843 crore, helped by healthy loan growth and lower provisions for bad loans. Net interest income (NII), the difference between interest earned and interest paid, rose to ₹25,339 crore from ₹21,529 crore, an increase of nearly 18%. On a consolidated basis, which includes subsidiaries such as its insurance and asset management businesses, profit rose about 22% to ₹16,333 crore.
HDFC Bank: treasury income drags
HDFC Bank, the country's largest private bank, grew profit a modest 4.7% to ₹19,510 crore. A key reason was a sharp fall in treasury gains, which dropped to about ₹780 crore from ₹2,390 crore a year earlier. Investors will look closely at loan growth, deposit growth and margins as the bank continues to adjust after its merger with parent HDFC Ltd.
Axis Bank: lower provisions lift profit
Axis Bank's profit jumped 38% to ₹7,003 crore. The biggest driver was a steep fall in provisions to ₹1,694 crore from ₹3,547 crore, suggesting fewer loans turning bad.
Yes Bank: sharp rise
Yes Bank reported consolidated profit of ₹1,080 crore, up 65% from ₹654 crore, with net interest income growing about 23%. The result comes days after the Supreme Court's ruling on the bank's AT1 bonds, which keeps the stock in focus.
IDBI Bank: lower on a high base
IDBI Bank's profit fell 39% to ₹2,205 crore, but this was mainly because the same quarter last year included a one-time gain of about ₹1,699 crore from selling its NSDL stake. Excluding that, underlying profit grew roughly 14%. The bank is also in focus because of its ongoing strategic sale.
What it means for investors
- Asset quality is holding up: lower provisions at ICICI and Axis point to a stable credit environment.
- Treasury income is volatile: HDFC Bank's numbers show how bond market gains can swing quarterly profits.
- Compare like with like: some figures are standalone and some consolidated, so headline growth rates are not directly comparable.
More results are lined up this week, including Bajaj Finance and UltraTech Cement, which could shape market sentiment along with foreign investor flows and global cues.
