Kim Jong Un Makes Surprise China Visit via New Yalu River Bridge

North Korea's Kim Jong Un crossed into Dandong on 24 October via the newly opened Yalu bridge, his first China trip in a year. What we know, why the timing matters, and what is unclear.

As of 2:52 PM IST, Saturday 24 October 2026. This is a developing story. Neither North Korea nor China had officially announced the visit or its purpose when this was written. Details come from South Korea's government and from news agencies citing unnamed sources, and some have not been independently confirmed.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made an unannounced trip to China on Saturday, 24 October 2026, crossing into the border city of Dandong over the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge. South Korea's Unification Ministry confirmed his arrival. It is his first visit to China in just over a year, and Yonhap counts it as his sixth visit to China. The trip comes a day before the anniversary of China's entry into the 1950–53 Korean War, and weeks before China hosts the APEC summit in Shenzhen, where US President Donald Trump is expected.

    What we know

    • Arrival in Dandong. Kim "arrived in Dandong, in China's Liaoning Province, via the New Amnok River Bridge," a South Korean government source told Yonhap. The Amnok is the Korean name for the Yalu River. AFP quoted a separate government source using almost the same words.
    • Greeted by Li Qiang. Chinese Premier Li Qiang greeted Kim on arrival, a South Korean government source told the JoongAng Ilbo. Yonhap also reported that Li had travelled to Dandong. Beijing had not confirmed this at the time of writing, and AFP said it had asked China's foreign ministry for comment.
    • A short trip, probably. A source from South Korea's ruling party told Yonhap that Kim was likely to return home later on Saturday. "This China visit is expected to be very short," the source said. South Korea's government told AFP it could not confirm his itinerary.
    • No confirmed Xi meeting. Reports so far do not say whether Kim will meet President Xi Jinping. If Kim returns home the same day, a Beijing summit looks unlikely on this trip.
    • Traffic curbs. Before the visit was confirmed, Japan's Kyodo News reported, citing diplomatic sources, that strict traffic restrictions had been imposed in parts of Dandong, according to the Korea Herald and JoongAng Daily.

The bridge that took 12 years to open

The New Yalu River Bridge links Dandong, China's main trading gateway with North Korea, to the North Korean city of Sinuiju. According to Yonhap it is a four-lane, 3,026-metre crossing that was completed in 2014 with about US$310 million of Chinese investment. It stayed unused for years because the roads and customs facilities on the North Korean side were not finished.

The two countries formally opened the bridge on 15 October 2026. Seoul's Unification Ministry called the opening the first tangible implementation of agreements reached when Xi visited Pyongyang in June, according to Aju Press. That makes Kim's crossing, nine days later, one of the most prominent uses of the bridge so far. AFP noted that the opening came a little over a month after North Korea and Russia opened their first road bridge.

    Why the timing matters

    The Korean War anniversary

North Korea and China mark 25 October as the anniversary of Chinese troops' participation in the Korean War. Beijing sent the "Chinese People's Volunteers" across the Yalu in October 1950. A South Korean government source told the JoongAng Ilbo that the trip "appears to have been timed" to coincide with the anniversary. This year is the 76th anniversary.

    Closer ties with Beijing

Relations between Pyongyang and Beijing had looked strained while North Korea rapidly expanded military cooperation with Russia. They have warmed since Kim's last China visit in September 2025, when he attended a Beijing military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and held talks with Xi. Xi then made a state visit to Pyongyang in June 2026, his first trip to North Korea in seven years. According to Aju Press, the two leaders agreed to raise ties to a "strategic" level and to expand trade, agriculture, construction and technology exchanges.

Yang Moo-jin, former president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, told AFP that by meeting Li in Dandong, Kim "may have sought to reaffirm the economic cooperation agreed during Xi Jinping's visit" and to "press China to move more quickly on those commitments".

APEC and a possible Trump meeting

China hosts the APEC summit in Shenzhen next month, and Trump is expected to attend. Trump has said he would like to meet Kim, but Yonhap reports that Pyongyang has not responded. Yang told AFP that Kim "may also have sought Beijing's active support and cooperation ahead of a possible summit with Trump in Shenzhen". This is analysis, not a confirmed plan. HorizonDesk has seen no official sign that such a meeting is being arranged.

    A Beijing political calendar

AFP noted that the visit comes just before Xi and other senior Communist Party officials meet in Beijing on Monday for the fifth plenary session of the Central Committee.

Putting the death rumours to rest

The trip also follows unverified rumours about Kim's death that circulated recently on overseas social media. South Korea's National Intelligence Service reportedly told lawmakers on Friday that the claims were false. North Korean state media said on Saturday that Kim had presided over a two-day meeting of military commanders in Pyongyang earlier this week. The dates differ between outlets: JoongAng Daily says Wednesday and Thursday, Aju Press says Thursday and Friday. At that meeting he called for building the "world's strongest" armed forces.

    Tensions on the peninsula

The visit comes as inter-Korean relations remain tense. AFP reported that South Korea's military proposed talks on Friday to clarify the border, after an explosion inside the Demilitarised Zone injured South Korean soldiers. Seoul blames North Korean landmines for the blast, and Pyongyang rejects the claim. China, North Korea's largest trading partner, has its own economic and diplomatic priorities this autumn. See our explainers on China's third-quarter GDP and Beijing's rare-earth curbs and its dispute with Japan.

    What is still unclear

    • The purpose of the visit. Neither government had stated it at the time of writing.
    • Whom Kim meets. Li Qiang's greeting is reported by South Korean sources but not confirmed by Beijing, and there is no word on Xi.
    • How long he stays, and whether he attends events for the 25 October anniversary in China or at home.
    • Any agreements. Whether new economic or trade arrangements are announced, for example on traffic over the new bridge.

    What to watch

    • Official readouts from Xinhua or North Korea's KCNA, which usually report Kim's trips after the fact.
    • Anniversary events on 25 October.
    • Any signals about North Korea and APEC in Shenzhen next month.
